Kemper Alumni Service Record in WWII

Kemper Men In World War II

Twice within a generation Kemper alumni have served their country in world conflict, and even cadets at the school have heard the call of duty and have left their study of the theory of warfare to participate in the stern reality.

In World War I 542 former Kemper cadets were in the armed forces. Many of them were commissioned officers. Thirteen were killed or died in service. A large number received outstanding citations. Fifteen faculty members were in the service.

Now the war with the Axis powers has come to a close. Only a partial evaluation of the role played in World War I by Kemper alumni can be made at this time. But it is quite apparent that the contribution made by old Kemper boys is highly impressive both in numbers and accomplishment. Present figures indicate that more than 2900 former students and teachers have been or are now members of the armed forces and over 100 of them made the supreme sacrifice.

In anticipating the erection of a permanent memorial to those who lost their lives in World War II, we are listing the complete honor rooll of names for alumni to check and report corrections and additions.

Information is sought of alumni who, for some reason, are not listed on this honor roll, although they did serve in the armed forces. News of men who have been discharged should also be reported to the alumni office.

It is with pride, but with sorrow and humility, too, that Kemper records within these pages, the names of the valiant men who, during the second great World War, have served their country and their world in defense of freedom.

During those trying years, when the orderly processes of living were interrupted by the demands of war, the men of Kemper assumed, with courage and determination, the responsibilities of service. These sons of Kemper have made varying contributions to the attainment of victory. They have served faithfully in many capacities and in many lands.

To some of these war brought tragedy, suffering, sacrifice, and death. The School grieves with the families of those noble ones who suffered and died in the cause of a better world. The names of all of ours who served are hallowed in memory, and recorded in the archives of the institution whose name they ahve ennobled through their service.
