My Uncle Bob McGill and his 1st-wife, Helen Soper, were one of those couples married during the time of WWII and just before Bob was sent overseas (1944).
After the war when Bob came back, he and Helen were separated, divorced the Spring of 1945, with the divorce finalized in September, 1945.
The Summer of 1945 was when Bob met his 2-nd wife, Felicia Monfort. Felicia and Bob married in 1950.
This is the poem that Helen wrote to Bob, sometime in 1944 and Bob wrote to Helen:
Love Poems of 1944 & WWII
All the girls here
Are simply "true blue"
Especially the one
Who belongs to you.
I have a heart,
Which is no surprise,
But having it overseas
Is where the trouble lies.
I must have yours,
To replace my loss,
Tell me, dear,
Am I gonna be boss?
Boss of your heart.
Yelp, that's for me
It's no wander
My heart sings with glee.
Say, are you the guy
Who goes to sleep in the act?
It won't happen again
And that's a fact.
When you come home
Would you like champange?
Or the little sompin'
We had on a train?
Or maybe sompin'
Like a shower would do.
Bet you don't know
What I'm referring to.
Does that sound
Like modest me?
That doesn't sound
Like your modest wife
You know, the little gal
Who shares your life.
WWII Poem - Bob to Helen - 1944:
The day is coming
And not far away,
When we'll meet again,
Not knowing what to say.
Words won't be necessary.
Kisses & hugs will do,
The ones we've been saving.
Darling, will that suit you?
It may be Okla. City
It could be most any place
When my heart skips a beat
And I see your adorable face.
Our first night together
Maybe in a hotel,
"Sorry no twin beds."
Now wouldn't that be hell?
You can imagine
How angry I shall be
To think of all places
You'll have to sleep with me.
But after you are with me
Only an hour or so
I really doubt seriously
If I'd ask you to go.
We'll spend the evening
Just proving our worth
It could be worse
In an upper berth.
I'll be slow to open my eyes,
For fear it's only a dream
It'll take hugs and kisses
If you see what I mean.
Please don't be bashful
And please be yourself
'Cause this is the time
To come down off the shelf.
While we are waiting
For this time to come
To fulfill these dreams
We'll both be waiting
For these glorious times
We'll circulate together
In each other's blood.
Nothing can stop it
Not even a flood.
Things we have planned
To say to each other
Will be lost when in
Our embraces we'll smother.
