Uncle Bob's Legacy

WWII - Love Letter From Overseas

I found this Dec. 3, 1944 - WWII Love Letter from Uncle Bob to his 1st-wife (Helen Soper)   while Bob was overseas in England.

Dearest Helen,
Well your loving husband spent his usual quiet evening last night. I read until two o'clock in the morning on "F Amber" (not sure what Uncle Bob meant by "F Amber.") and then went to bed and slept until 1200. Then dinner and down to the office to write you. I don't know whether I will get this letter written today or not, theres to much conversation going and I keep getting into the discussions.

I know I'm not telling you anything that you do't already know but I have almost forgotten how to type. Honestly did you ever see so many strikeovers in your life?

Just back from an hours intermission from this letter writing to see a parade of the Home Guard. It was very interesting as there were several hundred of them, and of course a band, and as you know, everybody loves a band.

Today is another of those cold windy days that I am sure you are getting plenty of at home. I'm afraid that I don't care very much for them myself. Gosh I sure wish I was home to spend this Sunday with you. Just think how darn pleasant it would be. Oh, well, maybe it won't be so long, and after all I have hardly been here any time at all yet. Of course when I was gone before I didn't have something so exciting to come home to. Which I can assure you makes a lot of difference.

This custom of having tea at 1000 and four in the afternoon is really something. I have really began to like it. Of course part of the reason is to get away from the office for awhile and the rest is a cup of hot tea certainly taste good on one of these cold days that we have been having plenty of. I usually go down every afternoon and have a cup with two of three of the officers from Div. Hq. and we set around and shoot the B until about five-thirty. You can undoubtly judge from that that even though all I do is sleep, eat, and work, its a sure thing that I am not overworked in the least.

I haven't been shoping for anything for you since that one time I told you about. It seems the best idea because things are so high here to wait until I am somewhere else before I get anything for either you or our home. With a 100 (one hundred) luxury tax on goods of that sort it is even more foolish to buy them than it is at home.

The last letter I have from you was written the 16 of November so I certainly am looking forward to a bunch of them soon. I hope the Indians didn't get that pony express rider bringing the mail out of Oklahoma. Its really just a matter of waiting a few more days and then to get a whole handful at once.

Before I finish this letter let me tell you that I love you with all my heart and soul, Helen darling, and that I always will. Be a sweet wife and I will always be the same sort of a husband. -- All my love, Bob Listen I have a good idea for an xmas present for mother from you and I. Why don't you go buy a good dog somewhere. You know we discussed it once before, and give it to her. You can teach it a few tricks and besides it will be good company for both of you.

Darling, I wish I could really express in words how good that I am married to you. Honestly, you are the most perfect wife in the world... and I sure do love that girl. How about sending me some cake or cookies, or anything of that kind?
