Bob's Letter To Mom

October 9, 1938, Lexington, KY

Dear Mother,

I received your letter the other day and was mighty glad to hear from you.  School is coming along fine and I  have been kept plenty busy with my studies.

Don't think you will be able to pry me away from this place, it's sure fine.  I like it here a lot.  But I expect that would be true of anyplace after you feel that you know something about it.

I have a budget for the month and it just told me that for the month of September I have unpaid bills equaling $13.00.  And starting on this month I have no money at all except that I have borrowed from Clark.  This includes, cleaning, laundry, shoe repairs, etc.  I hoped that I would be able to pay my bills the first but I guess I shall have to be a little late this month.

I had heard about Jack S.  It's really a shame too.  It must have created quite a sensation.  I do hope you are fixing things up for me, with the Review Courier.  I don't need it but it sure helps keep up on things in Alva.

I hope Merle isn't working too hard.  I also wonder what Dick Morris is living on besides love?  I certainly can't see that stuff.  i think I would much rather follow in the footsteps of J. Acel (James Acel McGill).  Tell me what he's doing (Dick Morris) I mean.

I hope you're glass of the old fashioned variety is coming along fine.  I am going to telegraph, that should get better results.  I think I shall add a few insults too.

I hope you don't think I have been throwing my money away.  I haven't weaned myself from breakfast yet, but I don't think I shall have too.  My rent for this month is due today the 9th.  As for the book this months can wait till the end of October.

I want you to write me and tell me exactly how you want me to pay this stuff.  I can't borrow from Clark every time the end of the month rolls around and I don't have any money.  If you feel that I am doing wrong, please tell me.

You told me not too write Checks but what am I to do when I have no more money.   So please write me what you have arranged or what you wish me to arrange.

It is now about 10:30 and I think I shall go to bed.  I ate a big chicken dinner today and went to a show.  Edward G. Roninson in "I Am The Law".  It   was really good too.

Well!  Take care of yourself and I'll be hearing from you soon (I hope).

Love,
Bob
