Bob's Letter To Gene

(After his return from Europe and his return to University of Kentucky at Lexington, KY.)

September 20, 1938, Lexington, KY

Dear Bud,

I hope the contents of this will not give you the impression that I am not diligently applying myself to my studies.  I merely wish to state a few facts about Lexington and the University.

In the first place, the school is really fine.  The fellows are as democratic as possible.  Much more so than Norman.  I was asked to pledge the SAE's and was undecided about what to do until Saturday night the 17th.  In the meantime, I had dates with the Phi Deltas and the KA's.  The only competition the Sig Alphs had.   They made the rest look sick.  So after thinking the proposition over for some time, I felt plenty lucky to be able to pledge them.

Clark and I are staying in this same room and eating in the house.  I might add the food is really good.

I suppose you are interested about the girls in the school.  they are really beautiful.  I don't wish my news to become biased, but honestly, Merle, I've never seen so many pretty girls in my life in one place.  They have Norman beat all out, or any other place I have been including Stephens.  I can't seem to find any explanation for it.  They've just got something - I don't know what at that.  I don't know but two or 3 on the campus.  One is the girl that I went with my first year at Kemper.   I haven't even tried to meet any of them.  all of the Sororities have open houses for our Fraternity, so I expect if I wish, I shall see the cream of the crop quite soon.

As for things to do - Well, tonight Deacon Jones is playing on the edge of town.   They tell me the orchestras that they have here are always good.

I like all my classes fine and if I don't make a few A's then they will be B's.

I hope the horses are getting along fine.  I don't understand about the conservation program.  How much do you stand to loose on the deal at present.   The relief I am looking forward to is Thanksgiving.  If Clark and I can make it and things work out we will go to Stephens Thanksgiving.  There are two boys here in school who are fixed at Stephens and it will be cheap because we can stay at the SAE house free.  I've convinced myself that I have done the right thing on that deal.   you can use your own discretion in telling it - about the Frat. I mean.

Any news that would be of interest I would like to know.  I sure would like to get the Alva Review Courier - for a laugh etc.  I ran on to Dorthy Cleek yesterday.   She is living in an apartment house a block away from 317 Gros.  She insisted I drop in to see her at the earlest opportunity - which I plan to do.

I sure appreciate all the mail I can get.  So keep me posted.  I wonder what the fellow said about my not arriving back in Alva after my trip.  Also, what Rodkey said about the Kodak.  Also, what Pop said about my staying in KY.  Thanks for writing Greer, etc.  It will get results.  Greer's just lazy, etc.  I can't think of much else.  I never did find out if Gruber was elected or not - and I guess that is final.

Hope you have sent the stuff by now.  Books cost nearly $20.00.  Pretty heavy - I have everything taken care of till end of this month.  Also all clothes cleaned, etc.  I'm going to eliminate breakfast other than coffee and if hungryy, toast.   So I'll see you soon.  Keep a few letters coming if you find the time.

Regards to All,
Bob
